Rex A Jones

Oscar is about a parrot who is trying to understand the world through television and social media and his adventures with his owner cartoonist Rex A. Jones. While ruling the roost and chewing on Rex’s books and antiques and ordering millet and his favorite food anchovy pizza via the Internet.

Oscar, is a Renaissance bird and a parrot of many talents. He is sassy, loud, opinionated, energetic, and all parrot. He keeps his parronts (parrot parents), Rex and Judy hopping with his antics and demands in true parrot fashion. With a large vocabulary and an ego to match. He makes himself understood, sometimes with a well-placed bite. His favorite food is anchovy pizza and his pastime is watching nature shows on TV and social media on his computer.

Hortence, he's mate for life and partner in crime shares in his adventures and his world view.

Rex, a hearing impaired cartoonist who shares his home, along with his much put upon wife Judy, with Oscar and Hortence and their two chicks Nugget and Daisy and Oscar's brother Onslow.

Raymond, is Rex's brother and sometime victim of Oscar's wrath.

Velma and Earl Smedley, Rex and Oscar's beleaguered elderly neighbors and sometime nude gardeners.

Melik Brown, Rex's best buddy and Oscar's African American veterinarian.

Nugget and Daisy, Oscar and Hortence's two chicks.

Sherbert and Violet, A pair of African greys who are Oscar and Hortence's best friends and who has Dr. Brown as their parront.

Joey, Sherbert and Violet's son and best friend and partner in crime with Nugget and fount of misinformation.

Other cast members include, Parrot Mason, Oscar's parrotlegal and sharp legal mind, Dr. Sigmund Feigel, Ph.D., Oscar's therapist, and Hyacinth and Sheridan, Rex and Judy's daughter and grandson.

Rex A. Jones is the creator of "Oscar". He’s the author of seven Oscar the cartoon parrot books and a member of the National Cartoonists Society. He's a retired hypnotherapist, actor, and teacher and works full-time freelance as an artist and cartoonist, living in Jackson, Michigan with his wife Judy, Quaker parrot Bubbee and green cheek conure Caesar. He was born in Fort Bragg, NC. He has loved to draw for as long as he can remember.



His first published cartoon appeared in Boy's Life when he was 12. He also drew cartoons and illustrations for his school paper and year book. He attended Lansing Community College and then Michigan State University receiving a BFA and then an MA in Art Education. He drew political cartoons and then a cartoon strip for the Leslie Local Independent called “Leslie Locos”, from 1979 to 1988. He also published cartoons in the newspaper “Town Crier” and in the Mensa Newsletter (of which he was a member) and other newsletters.​


In his checkered career he has worked as a farm hand, a heavy equipment operator, musician, actor, hypnotherapist, prison guard, school teacher, and college instructor. He worked in the theatre as an actor, director, scenic artist, set designer, and makeup artist. He enjoys practicing western martial arts and performed with Art of Combat a Lansing, Michigan based stage combat company as a stage combatant. However, his first love has always been cartooning since he read his first “Peanuts” comic strip. His early influences include Charles Schulz, Jim Berry, Joe Kubert, and Jack Kirby.

His favorite cartoons are, "Calvin and Hobbes", "Bloom County", "Doonesbury", and "Peanuts". He has had the pleasure of playing Snoopy on stage in "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" twice and has directed the show once.
